History of the domain
The domain of Lagrange, planted with vine since the beginning of the 19th century, has been producing for almost two centuries a wine whose quality has been recognized by the prestigious guide Féret, from the very first editions of 1850. Property of Mr de Subercazeaux (by elsewhere master of the Château les Eyquems in Tauriac), who had it from his mother, the domain was sold to Adolphe Sicard in 1908. It is he who built the house in 1928, and who developed the notoriety of the vineyard, before to pass on the torch to his grandson. In 2020, after a long rental period during which the wine was sold under another name, Alexandre and Laurence Laffont bought the domain: the “Château Lagrange” was reborn.
The vineyard
Located in the village of Bourg, in the heart of the “Côtes de Bourg” region, whose wine vocation dates back to Antiquity, our 8,4 hectares vineyard benefits from the specific microclimate generated by the Gironde estuary, giving to the hill sides of our C.D.O a significant advantage over other Bordeaux wines: greater solar radiation, less extreme temperatures, less rainfall. Planted on coasts, near the banks of the Dordogne, our vines also enjoy an ideal exposure for the ripening of the grapes, while the clay-limestone soil brings freshness and drainage. We find there the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot (58%), Malbec (18%), Cabernet Sauvignon (16%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). The blend of these grape varieties produces a fruity, gourmet and balanced wine.
To note: the high proportion of Malbec grape variety, once very common in France, but much less known today, which gives character to the wine; and the venerable age of some of our plots: the oldest date from 1928, which gives them the right to the designation “old vines”.
Our identity, our values
New winegrowers, in full professional retraining, we fell in love with this property on a human size, having all the advantages to become the new cradle of our family. Gradually taking over the reins of the exploitation, led for several decades by an experienced and passionate winegrower, we are committed to continuing its sustainable viticulture practices, respectful of the environment: as little phytosanitary treatment as possible, sparse and only organic fertilization, the concern to preserve plant and animal biodiversity (maintaining a natural grass cover mechanically regulated, without any chemical weed killer). The ultimate goal is to strengthen these organic and even biodynamic practices.
